BA/MA in Creative Writing, Information Session, 11/11/22, 6-7 pm

Are you a creative writing student who would like to dive more deeply into your craft? Have you heard of our BA/MA program in creative writing? Want to learn more about this five-year integrated undergraduate-graduate program?

On Friday, November 11th, 6-7 p.m., several creative writing faculty and current BA/MA students will host an informational/recruitment meeting, to be held in the Grucci Room (102 Burrowes Building). You’re invited to come and learn more about the program, mingle with faculty and students, and enjoy some pizza!

The basics about this five-year program:

  •  An integrated undergraduate/graduate degree in English with a creative writing concentration in poetry and in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction).
  •  A full-residency program that can be completed in two years—the student’s senior year and the additional MA year, which is typically tuition free.
  •  Applications accepted in March of a student’s junior year; two-year program begins in fall semester of student’s senior year.
  •  All students complete 30 credits of graduate course work.
  •  Under the supervision of a creative writing faculty member, each student completes a substantial creative project, due at the end of the MA year.
  •  Second-year MA students receive teaching assistantships that provide valuable college teaching experience and include tuition remission.

English Course Gives Students Deeper Awareness of Local History and Place

Julia Spicher Kasdorf, Liberal Arts Professor of English, designed and taught a course during the spring 2022 semester, entitled “Reading and Writing Place in Central Pennsylvania.”

Funded by the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence in Penn State Undergraduate Education, the course has students read literature set in or describing life in Centre County; they then engaged with their coursework through field trips. Texts in a variety of genres spanned from the 19th century all the way to the 2006 graphic memoir “Fun Home, set in the author’s childhood home in nearby Beech Creek, which the class visited.

Kalliope 2022 & KLIO 2022 Released!

Kalliope & KLIO 2022 hosted a joint release party and reading on Sunday, May 1, at Abba Java Coffeehouse, to celebrate the publication of their print and online literary and creative arts journals.

You can pick up your copy of Kalliope 2022 in any of the following locations: HUB-Robeson Center, Webster’s Bookstore (downtown), Burrowes Building (ground floor), Willard Building (main entrance, floor 1), and Sparks Building (main entrance, floor 1).

You can read KLIO Volume 6, entitled Altered Reality, online. 

 

Congratulations to BA/MA Class of 2022!

Last Friday, April 22, the eight graduating BA/MA students celebrated the culmination of their master’s theses by reading from their creative projects to an audience of family, friends, faculty, as well as continuing and newly admitted BA/MA students. The event was our first in-person student reading since 2019. Congratulations and best wishes to the graduating BA/MA students and welcome to the new students in the class of 2024!

KLIO 2022 Staffed Up & Seeking Submissions

Students in this semester’s ENGL 209/Literary Journal Practicum are preparing to roll out the newest edition of KLIO, an online creative arts journal, sister to our long-running print journal, KALLIOPE.

BA/MA Alum Trae Hawkins Wins Book Award from Penguin Random House

Congratulations goes to alum of the BA/MA program, Trae (David) Hawkins, currently in the MFA program at the University of Nevada. Trae recently won a prestigious award in support of his writing from the non-profit company We Need Diverse Books, in partnership with Penguin Random House. Trae’s manuscript was one of two selected to receive editorial critique and the possibility of a book contract—and he won money to boot.

The program is called the Black Creatives Revision Workshop, and Trae describes the experience and process of the workshop this way: “We basically got to have revision-focused workshops with the faculty listed on the website as well as virtual lunches with agents and editors who gave us insight into the industry. At the conclusion of the workshop, we got to submit our revised manuscripts to editors at PRH, and they chose two winners! The prize is essentially $4,500 along with the opportunity of having my manuscript floated to several imprints within PRH and strongly considered for publication by editors within these imprints. I also get editorial notes from the editor that chose my manuscript to win the prize. The timeline on when my manuscript is circulated to the PRH imprints is still being worked out, but I’m sure it’ll be sometime in the new year.”

Trae’s young adult manuscript, The Stars Are Ours, was reviewed by Matt Phipps, Assistant Editor at Penguin Young Readers. “I love the queer representation and it’s easy to rally behind this liberation narrative,” said Phipps.
